Set at the highest point of a naturally sloping site in Mirigama, Sri Lanka, this residence is a response to land, rock, and vegetation. Rather than flatten or erase the site’s defining elements, the design integrates them into the architecture—allowing terrain and structure to speak in harmony.
The plot’s topography—sloping upwards from either end to a high central spine—inspired a clean concrete form placed between granite boulders. The main house sits perpendicular to this boulder ridge, in the natural gap between two rocks offering sweeping views of the lower contours and opening into the landscape. The ground Level is glassed and open while the upper level is enclosed and defined; together, these volumes frame a fluid composition that responds directly to the site while creating layered spatial experiences—interweaving light, air, and view.
A central gesture in the design is the deep integration of existing granite boulders. These ancient stones rise through the house—cutting through floors, brushing past staircases, and anchoring the main living areas. They ground the home in its context and offer a raw, sculptural presence that contrasts with the clean, minimal geometry of the architecture.
The ground floor is conceived as a light, open shell. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, minimal partitions, and continuous visual links to the outside create a sense of flow and transparency. Living, dining, and circulation spaces spill into each other and into the surrounding landscape.
Above, the upper volume becomes more solid and enclosed, containing the private zones of the house. This contrast—between the grounded openness of the lower level and the defined, quiet mass above—creates a layered spatial experience that feels both expansive and protected.
Green roofs stretch across both wings of the home, softening the massing and allowing the house to visually recede into the lush surroundings. But vegetation is not limited to the roof—cascading vines and planted terraces bring planting into every layer of the design. These landscaped elements enhance comfort and intimacy, while also reinforcing the home’s integration with its setting.
Materiality throughout the project is kept minimal, warm, and tactile. Raw stone, smooth concrete, metal, and dense greenery come together to define the overall atmosphere. The architecture avoids ornamentation and excess, instead emphasizing balance, proportion, and light. Every line and surface is part of a cohesive spatial narrative—where solids and voids, enclosure and openness, strength and softness are carefully composed.
This home is more than a forms. It is a quiet expression of restraint, stillness, and belonging—rooted deeply in place, and designed with clarity, calm, and care.
